Anne of Austria
- (1601-1666)queen of FranceThe queen of France, Anne of Austria was born in Valladolid, the daughter of Philip III, king of Spain, and Marguerite of Austria. In 1615, she married louis x III of France and they had two sons (Louis XIV and Philippe d'Orléans) after 23 years of an unhappy marriage. Compromised by her love for the duke of Buckingham, she joined in conspiracies against richelieu, who accused her of treason for having corresponded with her brother, the king of Spain. Upon the death of Louis XIII, she became regent (1643-61) for the young Louis XIV and governed with mazarin, whom she perhaps married. As regent, Anne upheld the authority of the Crown during the Fronde uprisings and, in 1661, retired to Val-de-Grâce when her son assumed power.
